The River Brought Us Here
People who have never visited Frankfort often wonder why it was chosen as the capital of Kentucky. But as you travel through these lushly wooded hills, and down into this idyllic valley it is easy to see that one feature, in particular, figured prominently in that decision.
The Kentucky River, that natural highway back in the 1700’s, transported the pioneers who were headed westward. Snaking along each twist and bend, they were constantly astounded by the natural beauty of this fertile landscape. It’s really no wonder that so many of them decided to stay and build a community because Frank’s Ford offered them everything they needed; an ecologically rich environment which provided abundant sustenance. In time, Frankfort became a thriving commercial port for this region and eventually was selected as the state’s capital in 1792.
Trade routes have certainly changed over the centuries, and visitors now travel a vastly different interstate system to get here. But, upon arrival, the enchantment is every bit as evident now as it was then. Nestled in a deep, verdant bowl, Frankfort is graced with great physical beauty, as well as an openness of heart. The river, meandering through downtown, has been quietly witnessing a renaissance over the past few years. Businesses are returning after spending decades in the suburbs, and families who have been here for generations are rediscovering the magical spirit of downtown. Even folks who are visiting for the first time feel such a sense of place that they don’t want to leave.
Downtown Frankfort: Thriving And More To Come
As a community of independent souls, we are working together beautifully to revitalize our downtown and there is a pioneering spirit and feeling of opportunity in the air again. Restoration of The Grand Theatre is well underway and in 2009 will open its doors as our new 400-seat performing arts center. Other historic buildings are being redeveloped for mixed uses including residential apartments, condominiums and retail space. In 2010 the World Equestrian Games, never before held outside of Europe, are coming to nearby Lexington and we are expecting over 700,000 international visitors to our area.
The Kentucky River figures prominently in this rebirth, too. Downtown Frankfort Inc. is partnering with state, city, and county governments, public institutions and private enterprises to create a Riverfront Development plan spanning five miles. Additionally, the Corp of Engineers is repairing the lock and dam system that bookends our town, reestablishing the flow of water through our region. So, once again, this magnificent natural resource represents our forward movement into a healthy, prosperous future.
We’re proud of our history and also excited about where we are headed as a vital and thriving community. So, come to downtown Frankfort soon, and visit the heart of Kentucky’s capital.
